INTRO
Igloop Pavillion - which got mentioned in the best entries - is a provisional structure within Hyde Park that creates a harmonious relationship between human activities and the surrounding winter environment. Reinterpreting the classical shape of the igloo, it creates a sinuous skating track designed as a demountable steel structure build on top of precast concrete blocks and covered by a skin of polycarbonate panels resembling the snowflake geometry.
CONCEPT
The pavilion is a provisional structure within Hyde park providing winter recreational facilities. It starts from the natural shape of the snowflake, proposing it in a hexagonal windows pattern
Igloop creates a harmonious relationship between human activities and the winter environment of Hyde Park. Reinterpreting the classical shape of the igloo, it creates a sinuous skating track questioning the boundaries between indoor and outdoor while embracing the natural surroundings.
STRUCTURE
The structure has been designed with the usage of a physical engine plugin in Grasshopper.
The use of physics allowed the simulation of tension between volumes creating a continuous tangency between the different domes. This choice embodies in the structure the above-mentioned concept of continuity and “loop”.
